Apply for Integrated water resources management Master Program at German-Kazakh University in Almaty

We are glad to inform you that the «Integrated Water resources Management» Master Program (MA IWRM) at the German-Kazakh University in Almaty (GKU) calls the documents for  submission!

MA IWM builds upon the knowledge required in undergraduate studies of Agricultural, Natural and Social Science. The Program focuses on interdisciplinary approaches in water management. Students will be involved in the technical knowledge to respond all the relevant institutional, political, legal, ecological and economic issues  that have an impact on water management in Central Asia. The Program’s goal  is to train young professionals from Central Asia and Afghanistan, and to share the best international practices. Mainly German academic staff presents the high range of experience in the field of sustainable water management. The study program is accompanied by students’ active participation in scientific projects and practical field activities. Interactive teaching methods and a high ratio of self-study that make course unique and effective.

The program is designed for a two-year full-time study and takes place at the German-Kazakh University in Almaty.

Who can apply

  • Students and young water specialists from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Kazakhstan;
  • Admission requires a Bachelor’s degree, completed preferably in Natural Sciences and Agricultural Sciences.
  • Graduates in Economics, Social Sciences and Humanities with practical work experience (min 3 years) in water resources management, environmental studies or water related projects.

General admission requirements to be submitted online as scanned copies

  • Bachelor Degree Diploma (to be nostrificated in Kazakhstan);
  • Medical Certificate 086 (of your country);
  • Personal identification card and/ or international passport (officially translated in Russian);
  • 6 passport photos (3*4 cm);
  • Curriculum vitae (reflecting your work experience & scientific papers, skype login);
  • TOEFL certificate 560 or IELTS 6.0 (alternative to the KZ State exam in English);
  • Essay on «Water issues in Central Asia and Afghanistan and possible solutions» (2 pages, font «Times New Roman», font size 12, in English);

Documents to be submitted in original form to Admission of GKU: 

  • Bachelor Degree Diploma (to be nostrificated in Kazakhstan);
  • Medical Certificate 086 (made in Kazakhstan);
  • Copy of personal identification card and/ or international passport (+officially translated copy in Russian);
  • 6 passport photos (3*4 cm);
  • Curriculum vitae (reflecting your work experience & scientific papers);
  • TOEFL certificate 560 or IELTS 6.0 (alternative to the KZ State exam in English*);
  • Essay on «Water issues in Central Asia and Afghanistan and possible solutions» (2 pages, font «Times New Roman», font size 12, in English);

Language requirements: 

  • The study program is conducted primarily in English (70%), while 30% is in Russian;
  • A good command of Russian and English is obligatory condition for admission;
  • All Candidates (nominated/ self-applied) are required to possess an adequate level of English, providing International English language test certificate or passing KZ State Exam in English;

*The KZ State English exam fee is 4,200 KZT~ 13$ (the price for 2017). The payment is to be made in advance through Kazpochta or Narodnyi Bank of Kazakhstan.

Candidates with English language proficiency test report TOEFL  (minimum score requirement is 560), IELTS (minimum score requirement is 6.0) are exempt out of this exam.

  • Candidates from Afghanistan (nominated/ self-applied) are required to possess an adequate level of Russian language proficiency in order to be able to successfully pass such disciplines as Psychology, Pedagogy, Philosophy, as these courses are compulsory according to the rules of Ministry of Education and Science for Master Programs in Kazakhstan.

  • If in the Appendix of Diploma, you do not have the following items, then you need to take these courses in GKU:

International integration processes 

  • These courses are obligatory part on admission process. One course fee costs

25 000 KZT ~ 77 $. Payment to be made in GKU accounting department (Manager: Zhenya Ambardsumyan).

  • Course duration: 2 weeks in August (6.08 — 20.08) — personal attendance is required.

Tuition fee

  • 900 000 KZT ~ 2800$/ year
  • Candidates are eligible to apply for scholarships of DAAD and USAID covering costs of study at GKU and living expenses in Almaty.

DAAD provides 1 full scholarship for the best candidate from one country;

USAID provides 2 full scholarships/ country only for nominated candidates (by       Ministries, NGOs, Water enterprises and etc.)

Visa requirements

Candidates from Turkmenistan and Afghanistan are required to independently apply for a tourist visa to Kazakhstan for the period of the entrance examination (August 6-25, 2018) (approximate period of application procedure is 1-3 month).

German-Kazakh University does not issue the invitation for VISA
