3 rio 3_crThe Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC), an active regional Mountain Partnership member, has shared its experience on Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) activities in Central Asia during the side event at RIO+20 conference in Brasil. Titled “Pro-poor Payments for Ecosystem Services: global knowledge networking”, and organized with the partners: the World Agroforestry Centre – ICRAF and Forest Trends, the event presented cases of pro-poor PES projects worldwide, covering the examples from South-East Asia, Central Asia, Africa, and other regions, enabling policy and governance supporting such cases.

The Central Asia case has been presented by Simon Charre and Mariya Genina, from CAREC network, in particular, the regional experience on the labor payment as an alternative to avoid ecosystem services buyers’ impoverishment.

Leading the session, Henry Wyes, Deputy Executive Director of CAREC, noted that the lessons learnt in designing pro-poor (equitable) PES schemes, would pave the path for the future steps for better global knowledge networking on “how to improve the pro-poor component in PES scheme design”.
